Abstract

This research was undertaken to investigate the in vitro antibacterial properties of aqueous Hibiscus sabdariffa leaf extract against some selected reference bacterial strains. The initial disc diameter was 5mm. Zones of inhibition produced by aqueous Hisbiscus sabdariffa leaf extract ranged from 1mm at 500mg/ml to 13mm at 1000mg/ml. No zone of inhibition  was however produced at 62.5 to 250mg/ml against L. MonocytogenesATCC7644, S. typhimuriumATCC14028, S. flexneri ATCC120233 and Proteus vulgaris ATCC10315respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration of H. Sabdariffa was observed to be 500mg/ml against L. Monocytogenes Scott A, S. typhimuriumATCC14028, S. flexneri ATCC120233 and Proteus vulgaris ATCC10315while it was 750mg/ml against L. monocytogenes ATCC7644, E. coli ATCC29214, S. aureus ATCC29213, and B. cereus ATCC145719.The research shows that the aqueous H. sabdariffa leaf extract has potential invitro antibacterial activity against the selected bacterial isolates and supports claims of its medicinal value
