Abstract

Asymptomatic bacteriuria is a precursor for urinary tract infection (UTI). Against the background that certain jobs predispose people to UTI, the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria among soft drink bottling company workers was investigated. Urine samples were collected from bottling company workers and processed to diagnose UTI, using standard techniques. Prevalence of UTI was higher among staff that had no fluid intake water (p=0.028) and soft drinks (p=0.001), and those who did not void urine (p<0.0001) during their work shift. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common uropathogen (66.67 %). An overall prevalence of 6.16% of asymptomatic UTI was observed and measures to reduce the prevalence of UTI among bottling company workers is advocated.
